The Blood-Horse magazine reports that New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed a measure into law to expressly ban the sale of racehorses or breeding stock for slaughter, require microchipping of all racehorses to better track their whereabouts when finished racing, and to create a tax checkoff for residents to contribute to a fund dedicated to retired racehorse aftercare efforts.
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2021 Caretaker of the Year. The award, sponsored by Art Zubrod and Leah Cheverie’s Fair Island Farm in conjunction with the United States Harness Writers Association, recognizes the unsung heroes of the sport — the caretakers who maintain the health and welfare of the horses on a daily basis.
