Spencer Hanover scores in Oak Grove Trotting Derby; Jailbird Jog wins Trotting Oaks
Oak Grove Racing, Gaming & Hotel hosted the inaugural editions of the $500,000 Oak Grove Trotting Derby and $300,000 Oak Grove Trotting Oaks on Preakness Saturday (May 16), which saw Spencer Hanover (above) emerge supreme from a game stretch battle in the Oak Grove Trotting Derby as well as a powerhouse performance by Jailbird Jog to take the Oak Grove Trotting Oaks. Fire destroys former Balmoral Park facilities
Fire swept through the vacant facilities of the now defunct Balmoral Park Sunday morning (May 17), with flames and thick smoke pouring out of the roof of the shuttered track. Fire departments from multiple Chicago suburbs and Northwest Indiana were called to battle the blaze. The Crete, Illinois racetrack conducted live racing from 1926 until its closure in 2015. The cause of the fire is currently unknown. -
Periculum repeats in G3 Cutler Memorial
Despite being out of action since December, Periculum demonstrated midseason form in his 7-year-old debut, cascading off cover and rolling to a 1:49.4 win in the $150,100 Grade 3 Arthur J. Cutler Memorial on Saturday (May 16) at the Meadowlands, his second consecutive triumph in the annual event for open trotters.
